Character Name: Rosinante Donquixote
Age: 26
Canon: One Piece
World Description:
The world layout and a summary of the world's history can be found here. In short, One Piece takes place in an ocean world with only one continent, several distinct seas, and possibly hundreds of tiny islands. About 800 years ago, a major conflict resulted in what is now known as the Void Century, and many mysteries exist as a result of this lost history. One of these is the origin of what are colloquially called "devil fruits," which seem to be able to rewrite the biology of those who eat them and grant them unique powers. After the execution of the great pirate Gol D. Roger, who proclaimed he had hidden his treasure on a remote mysterious island for people to try to find, a number of people took to piracy in order to try and find the treasure. The world is now considered to be in the Golden Age of Pirates, and these pirates and the Marines, the world military force, are constantly in conflict.
History:
Found here. Briefly, Rosinante was born a member of the privileged elite class known as the Celestial Dragons. When his family moved to an island in the North Blue, the islanders turned on them as revenge for the atrocities committed by his people. Rosinante's mother died, his father was killed by his brother Doflamingo as a bid to be allowed to return home, and six year old Rosinante fled. Sometime during this time he acquired his devil fruit powers, and was found by Sengoku, a member of the Marines, who raised him as an adoptive son. Rosinante grew up in the Marines, and served for three years as a mole in Doflamingo's pirate crew (the Donquixote Family, not to be confused with their blood family) as the executive officer "Corazón" until leaving in order to prioritize finding a cure for a young boy named Law who had a terminal illness. The only cure was a devil fruit that both the Marines and Doflamingo wanted, so Rosinante betrayed both sides in order to pit them against each other so he could steal the fruit for Law. He did so, and saved the boy's life, but was killed by Doflamingo while trying to provide Law with an escape route.
Death:
The last hour or two of Rosinante's life was agonizingly painful. After stealing the ope-ope fruit that would save Law's life, he tripped and fell and was caught by the pirates he had stolen from, and though he fought them off, he was shot several times. He pressed on, found Law, fed the kid the fruit, then asked Law to deliver a message to the Marines on the island that contained all of his research into Doflamingo's underground trade partners and his plans to take over the nation of Dressrosa, as he needed a few minutes to pull himself together enough to walk out of there despite his injuries. By sheer and terrible coincidence, the Marine that Law found was Vergo, Doflamingo's own right-hand man who was himself a mole within the Marines. He ruthlessly beat Law and Rosinante to within an inch of their lives, then notified Doflamingo that they had been found.
Rosinante hid Law so that he could later escape, and acted as a decoy, drawing the Donquixote Family's attention. When Doflamingo confronted him, Rosinante confirmed his status as a Marine spy, and claimed that Law had already been taken into Marine protection. Enraged at the betrayal, the loss of the boy and the loss of the fruit, Doflamingo shot Rosinante five times and left him to bleed out in the snow.
What are your plans for this character in-game?
My main goal for Rosinante is for him to find himself a goal. He's a very driven person normally, but removed from his own world and dead, his canon character arc is complete. Without something to strive for he tends to revert to his usual ways of hanging back and watching others and being a bit of a wallflower, but his desire for justice and good should help in finding him something to put his energy toward so he doesn't just act the perpetual lurker who doesn't want to be noticed. He's not much of a leader but he will gladly support anyone he can come to trust and whose ideals match his own, and it would be fun to find that sort of person for him here.
What aspects of this game and/or its setting are you most interested in having this character engage with?
I personally love exploration in games, and Rosinante is well-trained in navigation and survival, or so we can assume from his long six-month journey in a dinghy with a sick child to take care of. So I'm definitely interested in giving him the opportunity to explore the landscape, and meet some of the locals to see what their story is.
How does your character generally get along with other people?
Rosinante is an actor, a liar, and a spy; he can get along with anyone he wants to if he thinks it will be beneficial. But often he'll fade to the background and let other people pass him by - an easier feat at home than in a setting where nearly ten foot tall humans probably aren't as common. Most of what we see of him in canon is during the most stressful period of his adult life, and he clearly wants to be left alone, or at least acts that way so he can gather information while seeming uninteresting. In contrast, when he's comfortable and with people he likes, he opens up and can be playful, goofy, and genuinely warm.
Like the Fleet Admiral who adopted him, Rosinante follows a sort of moral justice that means he favors people who act kindly toward others, who treat others as their equals, and who help people in need, but people who act selfishly and who cause indiscriminate or needless harm are people he will probably never see eye-to-eye with. As a Marine, he will fight and even kill in order to protect people from harm, for he feels that violence can be justified when done for the greater good.
What is your character's mental state upon entering the game?
Oh boy. Well, immediately, pretty distraught internally even if he does his best not to show it. He was just executed by his own brother after several of the most stressful years of his life, all while trying to protect the child he betrayed everyone for in order to save him. So sure, initially he'll be understandably horrified by what happened, worried as to whether Law ever made it out, and hopeful that the boy is doing all right, though he's not likely to show his anguish outwardly at all. He might come across as tired, in fact, or bored, because it's an easy front to put on and it helps him avoid having to answer questions about what he just went through.
But he's adaptable and he's been through hard times before and proved himself resilient. Eventually he'll move on, understanding that he's dead and that there's nothing more he can do for the people back home. He likes being a part of something and he doesn't like sitting around being idle, so I suspect even though he might be a little stoic and quiet and likely to keep people at arm's length, he'll throw himself into whatever mysteries Beacon presents to him soon enough.
Items:
Bloodstained and bullet hole-ridden clothing, half a pack of cigarettes and a lighter, a single hand grenade, and a bag containing six pieces of lead shot, a ramrod, a powder horn, and a small amount of black powder, all designed to be used for a flintlock pistol (which he does not have on him); several maps of North Blue islands, a compass, a dead snail phone, a pair of sunglasses, and a basic makeup kit.
Skills/Abilities:
Thanks to the powers granted by his devil fruit, Rosinante has a limited ability to manipulate sound. He can create a spherical barrier that blocks the passage of sound from either side - so any sounds made within the sphere cannot leave it, but also, any sound made outside the sphere cannot be heard by those within. Canon does not specify a size limit to this sphere but he is never shown using a barrier more than roughly 20 feet in diameter and usually much smaller.
Alternatively, he can touch a person and render them incapable of producing sound, as well as negating the sounds of things directly influenced by that person. If he silences himself, not only can he not make any verbal sound, but the rustle of his clothing and the sound of his footsteps vanishes, he can fire a completely silenced gun, he can throw a grenade and the explosion makes no sound, nor does the shrapnel and debris when it falls. Both this and the previous power seem to have no time limit, except that he can cancel them at will, and they auto-cancel if he falls unconscious.
Outside of those supernatural powers, Rosinante is nine foot seven inches tall, apparently built like a truck, and packs a hell of a punch. Military training means he's comfortable with most basic weapons and favors firearms and explosives. He's also a trained intelligence officer, skilled at lying and manipulation, a competent strategist, and shows strong sailing and navigation skills.
Flaws/Weaknesses:
For all that he's clever and resourceful, Rosinante can also be absolutely stubborn. When he sets his mind to something of great importance, it becomes all-consuming, to the point where he will go to great lengths and make hefty sacrifices to see it through, such as his years-long mission embedded in his brother's criminal group, and particularly the fact that he gave up his mission, betrayed not just the Marines but also his own adoptive father, and ultimately gave his life just to save Law.
Despite holding an officer's rank in the Marines, he doesn't seem to be much of a leader on his own and prefers to keep people at a distance, which can make it difficult to make and maintain friendships, likely resulting in a fair amount of loneliness because he does like people, he just finds emotional closeness to be difficult and uncomfortable. He finds it difficult to trust anyone as he suffered extensively as a child simply for being born a Celestial Dragon, and he still deeply fears the fallout should anyone else find out. Tied to this is a critical lack of self-esteem and self-worth. He gives and gives without asking for anything for himself, as even after everything he's done to save Law's life his internal monologue suggests he has doubts Law will even remember him. Later on in the series, when Law meets Sengoku, it is implied that those two were the only two people (aside from perhaps Doflamingo) who came to know Rosinante well at all before his death.
His cigarette addiction is bad enough to where chain-smoking is not uncommon, and his skin is marked with multiple scars of varying ages and severity. He seems to suffer from some form of disability he simply refers to as "being a clumsy idiot," but he truly will trip over anything, including nothing, will accidentally light himself or other objects on fire with his lighter or cigarette, and seems to lack awareness of hot objects until he's already tried to take a sip of boiling just-made tea.
Like any devil fruit user, Rosinante has a crippling weakness to still water in moderate to large volumes. It is said the sea itself hates the users and curses them with an inability to swim. Being submerged in something as simple as a bathtub, even just up to the knees, will cause him to feel lethargic and will make movement a struggle. Greater and deeper volumes of still water have more severe effects. Once the user is halfway submerged, they lose the ability to move entirely and can easily drown. Additionally, if any part of Rosinante's body is in contact with still water it will shut down his ability to use his powers. Lakes and the ocean are considered still or standing water; rivers and rain are not. This weakness can be circumvented if wearing a completely waterproof outfit, like a dive suit. Additionally, a type of material called seastone, or sea prism stone, seems to have the same properties as still water and contact with the material has similar weakening effects.
In terms of people, his fears and weaknesses primarily center around his childhood trauma, his brother, and Law. As a child, he and his formerly-elite family were hunted and regularly abused by angry villagers who sought revenge for the abuses the Celestial Dragons had subjected them to, and he spent most of two years hiding and starving. He barely remembers his mother who he lost early to illness, except that she was kind and beautiful and loving. He remembers too well being strung up on the wall of his family's burning mansion and blindfolded while the townsfolk shouted abuse and pelted him, his father, and brother with rocks and arrows in a form of torture that probably would have ended in death had Doflamingo not saved them all by revealing his terrifying mental strength and knocking the crowd out with a blast of Conqueror's Haki, a form of willpower reflected externally. He both loves and fears his brother specifically, because Doflamingo cared for him and helped him survive, but also murdered their father while the man was holding Rosinante and apologizing to them both, and then later in life became such a terrifying force of suffering and cruelty in the world which was the very thing he was opposed to - and it's by his brother's hand that he died.
Rosinante's greatest weakness is undoubtedly Law. He saw his brother reflected in the traumatized, violent boy and while he had given up on saving Doflamingo from himself, he did not want Law to grow up a similar sort of monster. Curing Law's otherwise terminal illness was crucial because not only would it save his life physically, the Amber Lead syndrome marked him visibly as the last survivor of Flevance, a country that had undergone a government-sanctioned genocide. Anyone they encountered feared Law's illness which was widely (and incorrectly) believed to be communicable, and people regularly labeled him a monster simply for existing, which resonated a little too strongly with Rosinante. Over the course of their six month journey for a cure, the two bonded deeply, and the last time Rosinante spoke directly to Law before giving up his life, he told Law he loved him, using a form which, in the original Japanese, implies the sort of love in which he could not imagine a life without the boy in it as well.
Honorable mention also to former Fleet Admiral Sengoku, the man who found him wandering on his own, took him in, and raised him as his own son. Sengoku is strong and smart and taught him everything and so he's not the sort of weakness that Law is, and Rosinante lied and betrayed him and the rest of the Marines to steal the devil fruit that saved Law, but Rosinante still owes his life to Sengoku and would absolutely hate for anything bad to happen to him.
Personality:
To those who know him well, Rosinante is laid-back, warm, sometimes a total dork, but not very outgoing. He's careful and selective with his friends but once his friendship has been earned, he can be fiercely loyal, affectionate, and will readily make sacrifices to ensure their happiness and safety. He's supportive, eager to please others, and deeply believes in justice and equality, the cause to which he has dedicated himself over the past thirteen or so years.
Military training and discipline has helped him overcome so much of the fear and trauma of his childhood and while he is still marked by it, it does not define who he is now. He has grown from a timid child that was always crying and clinging to his mother's skirts, to someone brave and determined to stand for what is right, even in the face of extreme danger and difficulty. Being raised in the Marines by the Fleet Admiral since childhood has instilled a strong sense of duty and honor in him, as well as a strong desire to be a part of something and to serve something greater than himself, and only in the last three years while acting as a mole in his brother's pirate crew has he gotten a taste of freedom and relative independence for the first time in his life, and it is likely that this contributed greatly to his eventual betrayal of his mission, because he chose to act outside his orders in order to save the life of the one person he truly and unconditionally loved.
These underlying personality traits are often masked outwardly. Rosinante learned early that his survival depends on his ability to lie and to avoid detection. These things were not trained out by the Marines but rather encouraged for his particular line of work as a spy. He prefers not being noticed and not giving out personal information, and his usual goal with most people he doesn't know is to come across as pleasant and forgettable, and maybe even a little stupid because being underestimated is often to his benefit. In reality, he's extremely sharp, tactically-trained, and always weighing the consequences of his actions before committing to them.
Of course, nobody is perfect. He can and will harm other people if he thinks it necessary. He absolutely believes that there are times when violence, even lethal violence, is appropriate in order to ensure the safety and well-being of innocent people. In order to maintain his cover in the Donquixote Family pirates, he had to act the part of a criminal or risk being caught. And because the entire time he acted as if he was mute, when it came to trying to drive children away who were looking to join the pirate crew, he resorted to trying to scare them off by physically abusing them, although it's unclear if this plan was his own idea or if it was suggested to him by Sengoku. When pushed to the limits of what he can tolerate, he can and does snap, which resulted in the destruction of multiple hospitals via explosives when doctors refused to even try to treat Law, who they proclaimed a monster through their ignorance of his medical condition.
Ultimately, it seems that Rosinante feels deeply convinced that even though there is pain and tragedy and violence in the world, people are generally good and worth defending. He knows that a person is not defined by the circumstances of their birth, the struggles of their childhood, nor should they be held accountable for the actions of their parents, countrymen, or anyone else - but they are absolutely accountable for their own actions and should be punished if those actions harm other people. He has been trained to think logically but he remains emotional even if he has to swallow it in order to get the job done. He considers maintaining peace and safety to be his highest priority so that good people can live good lives, and will give whatever is necessary to ensure that those who are innocent or redeemable will be protected from those who are not.
